We Stand.
“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own”
- Audre Lorde
If you’re a member, a parent, an aluma, or maybe even a potential new member of Alpha Delta Pi, you’ve probably heard our slogan “Be The First.” Derived from a time in which women were incessantly invalidated, Alpha Delta Pi was founded on the ideals of women empowerment. “Be The First” embodies the heart and soul of this organization, encouraging each member to be undeniably, unapologetically herself.
But there’s a breach in modern feminism, and there has been for a very long time.
Women’s rights have evolved significantly since 1851 when we were founded, and the conversation has become continually more open and more progressive. However, the dialogue of women’s rights addresses women’s issues as a whole, and neglects to delve into the very important intersectionalities.
Women empowerment is multifaceted. We are all born into innumerable variations of race and class, amongst other subcategories, but all women have at least one thing in common: we are women, and that is powerful in itself as there is strength in numbers.
You do not stand for women until you stand for ALL WOMEN.
To our Black sisters: while we may not understand, we stand. We hear you and we will continue to listen. We live for each other, but first we live for you. If women’s equality is the goal, then we must advocate for our oppressed sisters first. We are STILL listening, learning, and advocating.
BLACK LIVES MATTER.
